YAMA: The Home of Conscious Dance

Hello! I’m Susan the founder of YAMA Studios Glasgow.

YAMA first came to me in a moment of inspiration as I lounged on the grass in front of my lodging in Quito, Ecuador back in 1996. It wasn't until August of the following year that I officially brought Yama into existence and established its presence in Cumbernauld Village in Scotland.

Creating a sanctuary where individuals could explore yoga, movement, and artistic expression was at the core of Yama's inception. By offering these practices, the intention was to help people forge a deeper connection between their body, heart, and mind, as well as the collective body, heart, and mind of the earth.

Reestablishing harmony within our entire being enables us to expand our capabilities and effectively regulate our nervous system. This process allows us to acknowledge the inherent wisdom present within our own body, heart, and mind, as well as within the greater body of the earth, recognizing them all as interconnected aspects of a unified system.

Contemporary scientific advancements are increasingly aligning with the ancient philosophies that have long emphasized the importance of harmonizing these various elements. The concept of neuroplasticity, for instance, underscores our capacity to rewire and enhance our cognitive functions through practices like yoga, Pilates, and dance.

There is only one Yoga, however each school takes contrasting approaches. Although they may start from different places, they all have the same intention of unifying parts. This can be understood through practice.

“Yoga is the process of replacing old patterns with new and more appropriate patterns. Rid your body of its impurities, let your speech be true and sweet, feel friendship for the world, and with humility seek wealth and knowledge.”

~ Tirumalai Krishnamacharya
